SFRR Hero Changing the World

SFRR leader, MICHAEL DIMOCK is included in the book "Everyday Heroes: 50 Americans Changing the World One Nonprofit at a Time"

Meet Michael at our upcoming holiday party, December 9th! Long before words like "sustainable" and "locavore" became headline favorites, Michael Dimock was using his grassroots approach and business acumen to convince community members to set aside differences and join forces around the common objective of preserving the future of local agriculture. Part diplomat, part activist, the Roots of Change president understands what so few others in the new food revolution do: lasting transformation only happens from the inside out.

In honor of his efforts, he was recently included in the book Everyday Heroes: 50 Americans Changing the World One Nonprofit at a Time , published by Welcome Books. Two years ago, photographer Paul Mobley and author and editor Katrina Fried set out to find 50 of the country's most inspiring social entrepreneurs, and the results were nothing short of remarkable. The groundbreaking visual book provides stunning portraits accompanied by first-person narratives, highlighting the stories behind the causes.

Among those featured in the book are several local heroes, including Dimock, whose nonprofits are based in San Francisco. Readers will meet Ben Mangan, who co-founded EARN, an organization that offers the disadvantaged matched savings accounts ear-marked for higher education, homeownership or small business expansion. Armed with no less ambition is Cameron Sinclair, who was only 24 years old when he founded Architecture for Humanity, a global network that brings designers and architects together to collaborate on humanitarian projects. And Chuck Slaughter started Living Goods, which is building a sustainable distribution platform for life-changing products designed to fight poverty and disease in the world's poorest regions.

Food Sovereignty Tour, Oaxaca

Food First Delegation Explores Oaxaca's Vibrant Food and Agricultural Heritage Public Tour Will Highlight Food and Farming Systems in the Mexican State of Oaxaca

"Sin maíz, no hay país!" ... "Without corn, we have no country!" is a popular battle cry in Oaxaca, Mexico. As the cornerstone of Mesoamerican agriculture and diet, corn or "maize" is at the heart of the ongoing struggle for food sovereignty in Mexico. This December, Food Sovereignty Tours offers the public an opportunity to explore current food issues in this diverse region of Mexico first-hand as part of a guided delegation.

Participants will learn directly from local farmers, scholars and activists about the threats to rural livelihoods such as environmental degradation, mining, out-migration and contamination of native seeds by imported genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The tour will look into how peasant organizations are working to strengthen local food systems while playing an important role in the global food sovereignty movement. Along the way, participants will sample native fare, including renowned moles, countless corn-based dishes, and hot chocolate made from local cacao beans. In addition, delegates will celebrate the holidays with traditional Oaxacan dishes and enjoy "Night of the Radishes"—a unique festival celebrating food, farming and creativity. The delegation will also visit a maguey (cactus) farm that produces artisanal mezcal, a once criminalized tequila-like spirit.

The Food Sovereignty Oaxaca Tour will take place December 22 – 30, 2012. Partial scholarships are available for qualified applicants on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants who register (including deposit) by September 22, 2012, will receive a complementary copy of Food Rebellions! Crisis and the Hunger for Justice by Eric Holt-Gimenez and Raj Patel.

The mission of Food Sovereignty Tours is to build the global movement for food sovereignty through solidarity travel and immersion learning. Food Sovereignty Tours is a program of Food First/Institute for Food and Development Policy, which has been called one of the "most established food think tanks" by the New York Times. The program also leads international delegations to Bolivia, Mexico, Italy, the Basque Country and more.

Tour registration is open to the public. To learn more, visit the Food Sovereignty Tours website: http://www.foodsovereigntytours.org/international-tours/oaxaca.

She is also a mushroom hunter and has written about mushrooms and given talks and lectures on the nutritional, medicinal and culinary uses of mushrooms to groups throughout the U.S. Slow Food Russian River is grateful to Slow Food member Jill Nussinow for sharing her knowledge with us.

Mushroom Mania - A Tour and Tasting
I am excited about this mushroom event on February the 12th, a Sunday, on the weekend after the Super Bowl! Last week I went to "Mushroom Camp", the yearly retreat of SOMA, the Sonoma Mycological Association, with lectures, cooking demonstrations and fabulous food, and, most importantly, the hunt. I am a true novice to mushroom foraging and the diversity of species that grow in the forests around us is astounding. To add to that, because of new DNA information, the names of mushrooms - the Latin names that is that go back to Linneaus and beyond - are disputed, changing and in flux. I still feel as if I will never be able to master that vocabulary. But they say it takes ten years to develop fluency in any field as complex as the world of fungi. That will be many happy years. Please join us for this exciting event!  - Zeno Swijtink
